ObjectivesPresentationThe Italian Society for the Study of Headaches (SISC), whose institutional objective is to promote the dissemination of knowledge and professional education, institutes the "Interdisciplinary School of Advanced Education in Headache" which implements high level scientific educational training on this topic of significant importance in clincial practice.
The difficulty of educating in the field of headache was dealt with in the past by organising courses at a local level. SISC, acknowlegding the need that emerged from these courses to standardise the content and teaching methods, organized Boards of Qualification in Headache Disorders for several years. These courses, which dealt with the difficulty very well, were programmed on a rotation basis by selected Headache Centers and structured in a week of lectures and practical exercises conducted in small groups, with general satisfaction on behalf of the participants. The organisational effort of the various centres, however, was very expensive and some unavoidable inconsistencies in the management of the Boards occurred in different locations. At the same time this experience provided SISC with an understanding of another emerging necessity, the widespread need of information-training at a more in depth level, which was mainly expressed at the end of the week-long Board by the participants, with the request to deal with other topics.
To these highly qualified requirements, SISC decided to provide an adequate response with the founding of the Interdisciplinary School of Advanced Education in Headache, a cultural organic project which stands as the national reference point in promoting education and research in the field of headache.
Particular qualifying aspects, which SISC is able to offer thanks to its expertise and diversified characteristics tied to the Society’s interdisciplinary nature, are:
- the careful selection of teachers: as a rule, the topics are dealt with by a recognized scholar who has contributed with original personal research regarding the topic;
- the interactive educational setting with tutorial activities, discussion of clinical cases with the Problem Solving and Problem Based Learning methods;
- the introduction of practical clinical training to recall internistic and neurological notions necessary for a correct diagnosis.
The School, highly interdisciplinary, is open to all physicians professionally interested in this field and offers a three-year course, with three modules per year. Each module consists of a teaching unit which runs from Friday to Sunday, for a total of 18 hours of lessons per week-end, partly with lectures and partly with interactive methodologies. Admission to the courses is limited. The first course will provide the basic notions. The second course will be extended to include topics with more complex diagnostic or therapeutic features. Lastly, in the third year, the programme will complete the study of the issues addressed in the previous two courses, pathogenetic and basic therapy theories will be analysed, and the implications of multidisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and management of a Headache Centre will also be evaluated.
Each learning module will deal with different topics, which will be gradually studied in depth; other topics of specific interest will be added. Each module will be organized as an independent teaching unit, with CME recognition.
At the end of each module an attendance certificate will be given: at the end of the first year a Certificate of Headache Expert first level, at the end of the second year a Certificate of Headache Expert second level, and at the end of the three-year course a Diploma of Headache Expert.
In this way, the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches provides its members and colleagues a school of high scientific value, set on interactive teaching methods in order to increase the knowledge and the profesional skills of the participants.
